
Washington Guzheng Society
Founded in 2000, the Washington Guzheng Society is a non-profit music organization dedicated to promoting traditional Chinese music and culture. Under the artistic direction of Bing Xia, the Society has been a vibrant part of the Washington, D.C. arts scene for over two decades.
The group regularly performs at prestigious venues and institutions, including the Smithsonian Institution, Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, Library of Congress, Chinese Embassy, University of Maryland, Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, National Botanical Garden, George Washington University's Lisner Auditorium, and more. In addition to live performances, the Society has participated in professional TV recordings for PBS cultural programs and broadcast live concerts on the radio.
Members range in age from 8 to 80 and come from diverse backgrounds. Adult members include professionals from fields such as law, aerospace, education, medicine, research, finance, and technology. Youth members span from elementary school to college and have benefited greatly from years of guzheng study and performance. Through this musical journey, they’ve developed resilience, confidence, and a positive mindset. Many have gone on to attend top universities, including the University of Maryland, University of Virginia, Brown, MIT, Cornell, NYU, Columbia, Carnegie Mellon, University of Pittsburgh, Vanderbilt, Georgetown, UC Berkeley, Northwestern, Duke, Princeton, University of Pennsylvania, Emory, UIUC, and more.
The Washington Guzheng Society is known for showcasing the highest level of guzheng musicianship in the region. Many members have achieved top-level certification in the China National Musical Instrument Artistic Cultivation Performance Examination. One has received the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award, and several have won honors in international and national competitions, such as the American Protégé International Music Talent Competition.
The Washington Post has praised Ms. Bing Xia’s performances, highlighting the artistic excellence she brings to the group.
Today, Chinese folk music lovers in the D.C. metro area can enjoy the Society’s performances at various events, and also engage in learning opportunities through the group’s annual recitals and concerts. We warmly welcome new members and friends to join us in celebrating, preserving, and sharing the beauty of traditional Chinese music and instruments.

华盛顿筝乐团成立于2000年,是一支非营利性质的音乐团体。自创团以来,在艺术指导夏冰老师的带领下,乐团始终致力于传承和弘扬中国传统音乐与文化,二十余年来始终活跃在华盛顿地区的艺术舞台上。
乐团演出足迹遍布多家知名机构,包括史密森学会、肯尼迪艺术中心、卡耐基音乐厅、国会图书馆、中国驻美大使馆、马里兰大学、巴尔的摩梅耶霍夫交响音乐厅、国家植物园、乔治华盛顿大学李斯纳剧院等。除此之外,筝乐团还曾参与PBS文化节目等电视录制,并多次在广播电台进行现场音乐会演出。
筝乐团的成员年龄从8岁至80岁,涵盖各个年龄层与社会背景。成年成员来自法律、航天、教育、医疗、科研、金融、计算机工程等多个专业领域;青少年成员则从小学一年级至大学各个阶段不等。通过长期的古筝学习和舞台演出,学生们不仅锻炼了毅力,也展现了自信和积极向上的精神风貌。
凭借古筝特长,乐团的青少年成员在升学中脱颖而出,成功进入心仪的高等学府,包括:马里兰大学、维吉尼亚大学、布朗大学、麻省理工学院、康奈尔大学、纽约大学、哥伦比亚大学、卡内基梅隆大学、匹兹堡大学、范德堡大学、乔治城大学、加州大学伯克利分校、西北大学、杜克大学、普林斯顿大学、宾夕法尼亚大学、埃默里大学、伊利诺伊大学香槟分校等。
作为华盛顿地区民乐演奏水准最高的团体之一,乐团多位成员获得了中国音乐学院校外考级古筝最高级别演奏证书。成员中有人荣获杰克·肯特·库克青年艺术家大奖,亦有多人多次在国内外重大赛事中获奖,例如“美国Protégé国际青少年音乐大赛”“全美亚裔青少年音乐比赛”等。
《华盛顿邮报》曾高度评价夏冰老师的古筝演奏,称其演奏技艺与艺术感染力俱佳。
如今,华府地区的中国民乐爱好者不仅可以在各种演出活动中欣赏到筝乐团的精彩演出,还可以通过乐团每年举办的观摩会和音乐会,与团员们互动交流、共同学习。我们诚挚欢迎更多朋友加入筝乐团的行列,一起学习与传播中国传统民族音乐。
